The acclaimed “temple town” of Siem Reap—a green riverfront launching point for the spectacular Angkor Wat—is undergoing a transformation as part of a massive renovation effort.
New wider roads, bike lanes, parking, car-free pavement, and gardens will make the city more walkable, while at Angkor, a forest network of shaded bike routes, pedestrian boulevards, landscaping, and the elimination of merchants has lessened the bustle, bringing serenity to a religious experience.
The restoration of wildlife—otters frolicking in moats, gibbons are hanging in the treetops—thanks to coordinated reintroduction efforts at the Angkor Archaeological Park.
