A plan to widen National Road 6 from two lanes to four lanes
The Ministry of Public Works has revealed a plan to widen National Road 6 from two lanes to four lanes in order to improve people travel, products transportation, and tourism.
Minister Sun Chanthol spoke at the inauguration ceremony of the Public Works Service Center in Siem Reap province on Wednesday, saying that the ministry first performed a feasibility assessment on the project.
The research was separated into two parts. First, the southern portion between Kampong Cham’s Batheay district and Kampong Thom province. The second section connects Kampong Thom and Siem Reap provinces.
“The ministry performed a feasibility study on road upgrading in a portion between the Skun region (Batheay district) and Siem Reap province (widening the route from two to four lanes).”
320 kilometres between Phnom Penh and Siem Reap
National Road 6 covers 320 kilometres between Phnom Penh and Siem Reap province and is critical for tourism growth and economic activity because it connects Phnom Penh to Siem Reap province, which is home to the Angkor world heritage site, he added.
The Cambodia Logistics Association’s president, Sin Chanthy, stated Wednesday that the road improvements would benefit the transportation and logistics industries.
"National Road 6 is crucial since it connects several provinces. Moreover, road number 6 may be used for goods transportation and people's travel if it is made broader since it saves time and money."
National Road 6 was constructed in phases. In 2017, the upgraded 40-kilometre route spanning from Phnom Penh to the Batheay district of Kampong Cham province went into service.
The segment’s cost was $70 million, of which $68 million was a concessional loan from the Chinese government, and the rest was paid for by the Cambodian government.
In 2018, a 251-kilometer portion of National Road 6 from Kampong Cham province to Siem Reap province was opened.
